New College Students Will Be Career Confident

By Jul.23, 2015

The first students joining the new University Technical College (UTC) opening at the heart of MediaCityUK this September will leave with qualifications and career confidence, according to research released today (July 24th).

UTC@MediaCityUK opens in September and has already proved popular with students and parents. Many joined the waiting list for places this year after the college was over-subscribed, despite increasing its initial admission numbers to meet demand.

Research amongst students at UTCs that are already open shows almost 9 out of 10 (87%) feel confident in their ability to succeed in work and 86% are confident of getting a job that suits their skills when they leave education. The findings are taken from a survey of 850 14-18 year old students from UTCs across England in June 2015 undertaken by the Baker Dearing Educational Trust.

The survey also revealed that nearly three quarters (70%) of UTC students felt that their prospects were better than if they stayed in a mainstream school. When comparing their UTC to their previous school, UTCs came out top in all aspects. The difference was most stark when comparing links to businesses (85% said they were better) and specialist equipment (86% said it was better).

UTC@MediaCityUK Principal Anne Casey said: “Alongside a brand new building with state-of-the-art technology we have a very strong group of employer partners including Cisco, Flix, UKFAST, Unity, dock10, Oracle, Deluxe, Panasonic and Adobe. We will also be working with Apple, Google, Autodesk and the BBC, giving our students the knowledge, qualifications and experience that will make them confident and successful in their careers.”

Lord Baker, Chairman of Baker Dearing Educational Trust, said:

“These findings confirm that students who attend University Technical Colleges are gaining an education that gives them greater confidence in finding a job, one that suits their skills and pays well.”

The UTC@MediaCityUK will offer a digital and technical education for students from 14-18 across the North West who have a passion for shaping digital and creative content. It is situated in a brand new state-of-the-art building close to the University of Salford campus, The Lowry and the BBC. The UTC has facilities such as filming studios, sound and radio recording studios, plus gaming and design labs, all packed with industry standard equipment. Students will combine their technical learning with GCSE and A Levels in core subjects including English and Maths.
