RUTH Bradbury, the principal of University Technical College, Media City, exudes enthusiasm.
She loves her job, her college and, above all, her students.
“They are unique because they choose to come here even if it’s a long way.”
Wheelchair user Lewis Telford, aged 15, travels daily from Wigan by bus and tram because he loves the facilities and equipment.
“We allow the students to be colourful and express their individuality by the way they look.”
Fourteen to 16-year-olds can join without qualifications but over 16s must have five GCSEs grade C or four including maths and English.
“We stress the importance of core curriculum subjects” said the head, who insists on being called Ruth.
“Maths, physics, computing and English are just as important here as TV and film production, interactive media, game design and digital publishing,” she said.
“Our progress is far better than the national figures suggest because national figures show the results of pupils’ entire secondary education whereas we only take them from 14 – 19.
“Sixth formers have one day a week free for work experience and we hope to extend this to all.”
The college works alongside Salford University, the Aldridge Foundation educational charity, and the Lowry.
We are open as usual today. Students are expected at usual time. The snow is forecast to stop soon.
Please be careful travelling in.
The UTC@MediaCityUK are delighted to celebrate our first set of GCSE results. In the first year of the new, more challenging examinations in GCSE English Language and Literature and Maths, half of the UTC’s first Year 11 cohort to sit examinations, gained a GCSE grade 4 or above in English and Mathematics.
Notably, over 40% of the English grades were above the GCSE grade 5 for English. This continues the success of results in English for Year 13 last week. A quarter of all Maths grades were grade 5 or above.

Here at UTC we are focused on making sure our students are making the most of the employer ties we have by being in the heart of the northern digital sector here at MediaCityUK. We have two dedicated members of staff who focus on marketing the UTC and bringing in business men and women from around the area to talk to and hopefully inspire our students to make the most out of their education. One of these members of staff, Laura now writes a blog which is updated regularly to detail the great employer engagement work being done here at UTC.
