SEND - Additional learning support for students with SEN
At the UTC we recognise that additional learning support is about giving students the help they need to do well in school. Of course, all learners need help in some shape or form, so what counts as additional support? Well, a student is said to have additional support needs when they need more help than other students in their class, or a different kind of help to what’s usually given to students of the same age. This could be anything from working closely with the teacher, to having special IT equipment. It’s not always the case that students who need a bit of extra help at school have a special educational need, or a long-term disability. There are actually a few reasons that students might need some extra support from school. These include the following: SENDCo suppport, small class sizes and bespoke teaching programs, Small group/individual curriculum interventions determined based on half termly assessments, Access to Learning Support Hub during social times, Learning Support Interventions including Social Skills, Community integration and travel training, Access to assessment by the Educational Psychologist, Access to advice from the Secondary Inclusion Team, Access to assessment and regular meetings with Occupational and Physiotherapists, Medical/Health Care Plans and Mental Health Risk Assessments, wheelchairs access at all points in the building, lift passes and personal fire evacuation plans. The Learning Support Team creates Student Profiles for all students with additional needs, which are shared with teaching staff to support QFT. These are reviewed three times a year and include advice received from external agencies such as Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language, occupational therapy, where appropriate.
