In Years 12 and 13 Students can choose to take English as one of their A-Level subjects, the outline of the English Language course for Year 12 is below:

Autumn Term:

What are we learning this term?

  1. Analysing language
  2. Language Diversity

 

  1. Analysing Language: An introduction to language levels. Analysing texts with a specific focus on mode: speech, computer mediated communication and genre. The focus of teaching will be terminology for close textual analysis and understanding how meaning is created in different texts.
  2. Language Diversity: An introduction to language diversity, considering language and the individual, social groups and regional variation. You will develop skills in evaluative essay writing of both the texts you study and your own writing.

How will we be assessed?

Reading and creative writing assessments based on the materials and tasks you will complete in the exam and coursework pieces.

 

Spring Term:

What are we learning this term?

  1. Representation in Texts
  2. Language Diversity

 

  1. Close textual analysis of a range of texts with a focus on representation through the use of language. You will develop comparative writing skills.  Throughout this half term, there should be some tasks focused on replicating style models using the texts studied.
  2. Developing knowledge and understanding of language diversity and how it is represented through language with a specific focus on gender, occupation and ethnicity and attitudes towards language diversity. You will develop evaluative essay writing skills.

 Spring Term:

What are we learning this term?

  1. Coursework

 

  1. Language Change: Introduction to language change: how and why does language change? You will explore issues around language change from 1600 to the present day.
  2. The Investigation: An introduction to non-exam assessment: language investigation. You will examine research methodologies and suitable approaches for different investigation types.  You will propose a hypothesis and methodology.

How will we be assessed?

You will continue to complete reading and writing assessments in you lessons and the mock examination.  Your coursework investigation will be assessed and graded by your teacher and will be submitted to the exam board to make part of your total grade.
