Pathways at 14

Choosing your pathway

There are three pathways within our technical specialism qualification at 14:

  • Radio, TV & Film
  • Interactive Media & Gaming
  • Interactive Media & Graphics

When you join us in Year 10 you will be given lots of hands-on experience to decide the right pathway for you. You will have several weeks to experience the three different pathways before you choose.

We provide detailed information, advice, and guidance to you and your parents to help you choose the most suitable courses and level.

Radio, TV & Film

This work-related course will introduce you to filming and studio techniques, including video editing, through direct experience in the industry as well as expert teaching. As part of this course you will investigate key features of digital moving image and audio production. You will learn about the context of your chosen industry within the media and about TV and radio audiences.

Practical production focuses on planning and pitching your own digital media product. This will be done in conjunction with real industry professionals. You will also gain experience of editing sound and moving image productions using our industry specification editing suite.

Post-16 study: This course will prepare you for a more in depth study at Level 3 BTEC in Creative Media or apprenticeships within the technical side of film and television production.

Careers: Eventual careers in this industry might include: camera operator, producer, director, digital image technician, editor and many more.

Interactive Media & Gaming

This course provides all-important experience through work placements and partnership with local employers. You will complete a minimum of 40 days work experience, completing a full day or a half day of work experience a week. You will benefit from a wealth of industry expertise and know-how.

Your core teaching and learning activities will focus on digital media sectors and audiences, planning and pitching your own digital media product, and exploring digital games production, and website production.

Post-16 study: This course will prepare you for a more in depth study at Level 3 BTEC in Creative Media or apprenticeships within the games industry.

Careers: Eventual careers in this industry might include: app developer, website designer, game designer, programmer, web editor, digital production designer and many more.

Interactive Media & Graphics

This course presents how visual arts, graphics and design are used across the media industry. You will gain the knowledge and skills required for the design and development of digital publishing products, websites and graphic design. You will also organize and manage the production of a digital publishing product and learn how photography can be used in the media industry.

Post-16 study: This course will prepare you for a more in depth study at Level 3 BTEC in Creative Media or apprenticeships within the creative media sector.

Careers: Eventual careers in this industry might include: animator, illustrator, photographer, art director, web designer, working in advertising and many more.

Taught by industry experts

All our technical pathways involve studying courses within the BTEC first Edexcel Level 2 Certificate in Creative Media Production.

We teach in close collaboration with the University of Salford and our employer partners. These partners will come from the media industry, and offer real technical expertise and insight on the latest digital developments. You will have the opportunity to incorporate work experience into your studies.
