Students and staff at UTC@MediaCityUK are today celebrating an impressive set of A Level and Level 3 BTEC results.
The overall pass rate was 97.4%, with over half (55%) awarded at the top A*-B grades or equivalent, and 41% of all students achieving at least three of these top grades.
Julian Wyatt, 18, achieved two Distinction Stars and one Distinction in Level 3 Interactive Media and Gaming, as well as A Grades in A Level Maths and Physics. He says, “I have always been fascinated by computers, and I chose the UTC over a more traditional setting because it offered me the chance to get practical experience at the same time as academic study. For example, I developed a retro-gaming app, UTC Rush, which is available to download from major app stores. I have offers from Russell Group universities to study a BSc in Computer Science, but I haven’t yet decided which one to accept.”
Becky Price, 18, has followed the TV and Film Production pathway, and is celebrating a triple Distinction Star alongside a Grade B in English Language A Level. “The location of the UTC, and the range of employer links, means that I have had experiences that I couldn’t have had anywhere else” she says. “For instance, I was part of a team that produced promotional videos for Barclays Eagle Labs and for The Rio Ferdinand Foundation; I planned, filmed and edited short videos for the charity Youth Charter, and was a social media co-ordinator on a music live lounge channel for Captive North.”
Becky plans a career in TV, and has been accepted to study for a degree in TV Production at the University of Salford, one of the UTC’s key partners.
UTC Principal Ruth Bradbury, who joined the college in November 2017, said:
“This year’s results show a significant improvement across the board, including in pass rates, high grade percentages and average points scores. When I started in my role, I could see straight away that the college had immense potential, not least because of the positive, dedicated and hard-working students. Also, we are lucky to have a team of knowledgeable and committed staff, the vast majority of whom have real industry experience as well as teaching qualifications. I am delighted that those strengths are reflected in this year’s results, and I am really looking forward to building on this success in the future. This is an absolutely unique place to study and to work: we have prestigious TV and tech companies right on our doorstep, and our staff and students get so many amazing opportunities.”
The UTC has a very small number of places left in Years 10 and 12 for this September. For further information, please visit www.utcmediacityuk.org.uk or call 0161 661 3947.
