Employers are fundamental to all UTCs. They shape the technical specialisms of the UTC and ensure it meets the needs of local employers. We are unique amongst UTCs in being located at the heart of an industry employer-led environment: MediaCityUK in Salford.
Employers influence the teaching and learning that you will receive, provide leadership in the structure of the curriculum, and endorse the qualifications offered at a UTC.
- Work with teachers to create employer projects that focus on real-life challenges and are relevant to industry
- Give students high-quality and relevant work experience
- Support and mentor students, guiding them on career routes and options.
By working on live projects and with industry professionals you will not only master relevant industry techniques and standards, but will experience a unique enrichment programme of extra-curricular activities that will inspire and reward.
The UTC@MediaCityUK has an employer partner portfolio that mirrors our curriculum and options. This includes organisations such as ITV, Cisco, Flix, UKFAST, Unity, dock10, Oracle, Deluxe, Panasonic and Adobe. Alongside these we will also be working with Apple, Google, Autodesk and the BBC.
Because the creative and digital industries depend on innovation, it’s vital that skills continually evolve. Yet it’s also widely accepted that there’s a shortage of people with the necessary abilities – whether academic, technical or practical – to meet the industries’ needs.
These are exciting times – especially with the massive amount of activity taking place at MediaCityUK. One in ten jobs in the North West are now in the creative and digital industries. The purpose of UTC@MediaCityUK is to swell the pool of talent for the industry to recruit from.
Few subjects will open as many doors for students in the 21st century as computer science and digital technology. UTC@MediaCityUK is showing intelligence, drive and enthusiasm to make this a reality for students. The ‘Oracle Academy’ provides bespoke resources to help awaken and deepen student interest in this important field of study, and the UTC’s take up of these resources shows a commitment to ensuring the future career success of young students in Greater Manchester.

For Cisco, UTC@MediaCityUK is driving a new type of engagement with industry, and one which is relevant to young people wanting to work in the digital economy. We are pleased to be an industry partner and are happy to be working on exciting projects together.
